Trwyn yr Wylfa - A New Site for Us

Trwyn yr Wylfa

Set in the hills above Penmaenmawr just outside Conwy in North Wales is Trwyn yr Wylfa. Behind the site are the beautiful Welsh Hills, in front nothing but sea! A great family site where you can choose your own pitch but be prepared to have a scout around as it is quite hilly, we were on a bit of a slope and spent a lot of the time slipping down, so next time I think we need to have a proper look around for a more level pitch, that being said it didn't take away from how nice the site was especially the stunning views!

The facilities were spot on with cleanliness, Pete has said that the mens toilets were the cleanest he has seen on a campsite. There are also two family bathrooms which include a shower so great if you have little ones. In the washing block there is also a fridge/freezer that you can use along with laundry facilities and a microwave, novel for us as we are used to basic facilities when camping. There is also an ice cream van that visits the site each evening, this seemed to prove popular.

The location of the site meant it was easy for us to explore the local area and catch a bus. On our first evening we walked down into Penmaenmawr to the fish and chip shop then down onto the beach to enjoy our supper. There is a nice stretch of beach here with a small paddling pool for the little ones, park and seating area which was being enjoyed by a number of people having their tea.

View out to the Great Orme and Llandudno

After our dinner we headed back up to the site to settle down for our first night and hoping we didn't end up rolled on top of each other by the morning!

Wales Coastal Path

For our first day we decided to try the Wales Coastal Path from Conwy over to Llandudno after first catching the bus in to Conwy.

The path takes you out of Conwy over the bridge then down along the side of the river giving you a great view of the castle behind you.

The path heads slightly inland whilst passing Deganwy Quay Hotel, before going along the promenade path and into the sand dunes. I do think that this part of the path could be more maintained as it is used by cyclists who would find this terrain difficult to navigate as there is not a fixed path to follow being under sand.

View back to Conwy

The path soon opens out on to the end of West Shore, at this point you can either navigate a long the cobble stone beach or along the sand which does clear to a path again. Pete and little man had great fun skimming stones along the shore

The walk took us about two hours including stopping for lunch a long the way, it was a nice walk which was well used by a lot of people especially dog walkers.

We would like to do more the Coastal Path route so this will be something we will be looking into over out quieter months.

Arriving at West Shore it was just a short walk down into Llandudno, our favorite seaside town and we always have to pay a visit to the arcade on the pier to spend some 2ps and win tickets!

After a nice afternoon around Llandudno we caught the bus back to Penmaenmawr then the short walk back to site to make tea at the tent whilst little man had fun playing with some of his prizes that he won in the arcade.

For our second day we took the bus into Conwy to walk along the walls, something that little man hadn't done before. We started by the castle and thought you could walk all the way along as we have done before, however part of the walls are now closed and you need to descend back down and follow the map to the next section where you can then walk all the way a long the outer edge and down to the river.

I would advise having good footwear if you want to climb the walls down to the river as there are some steep areas that can become slippy if wet. Once up on top there are some lovely views across the town to the castle and river beyond.

After exploring the walls we headed back down into Conwy and to the craft market that was on the quay. We sampled and bought some local cheese and Pete bought me a lovely and unique wooden pen for work.

Behind Conwy is Mynydd y Dref, also known as Conwy Mountain. This is also something we would like to climb and will be looking into some routes that we can take for next year as I believe the views are stunning

Back at site for our final night with an amazing sunset out across the bay. This has been a lovely relaxing break for us and as always Llandudno and the surrounding area never ceases to bring joy.

Our overall review of Trwyn yr Wylfa is that it is a lovely site which is well kept and has great facilities. There is no music of any kind allowed, whilst this is great and stops large groups and loud music, I do like to play the radio quietly whilst cooking or relaxing on site. This wouldn't put us off returning again as it is such a beautiful site, we just need to choose a more level pitch next time! We just love the views and the location is great for us to get around using the local bus service.

Until next time....

A Short test trip!

The Farm Burscough

It has been a long time since our last adventure and for us it has felt like an eternity, however we have had a lot going on over the past year. We got married!! With all the planning the year just disappeared and we are now ready to get back out on our little trips and finding new sites to try.
We have an addition to our kit, a new tent. We will do a separate review for this once we have tried it out a few times so this was our test run of the Coleman Mackenzie 6.

The Farm at Burscough is a Camping and Caravan Club site however you do not need to be a member to pitch here. There are two small fields, a shower/toilet block with dish washing and a children's playground which our little one loved.

On site are donkeys, goats, alpacas and hundreds of chickens!!

Arriving here we were met by one of the owners who showed us to our pitch which was opposite the playground, this meant we could relax and still watch out little one. As we arrived in the evening, it was a quick tea and settle down for the night.

Saturday we were met with rain and cold weather, typical of the British summer! We played some camping games in the tent as we now have lots of extra space and means that if it is just the three of us our little one can have a games room when there is bad weather!

After playing some games, we visited the on site cafe where we took shelter from the miserable weather and warmed up with a nice lunch and hot drink.
The weather improved in the afternoon and we decided to take a walk down the lane and enjoy a game of Go Find It which our little one loves trying to find the objects from the cue cards.

After our walk we had a look around the onsite farm shop which has local produce and decided to indulge with strawberries and cream for after tea.

Our little one enjoyed playing with his new friends and we enjoyed the evening fresh air and views across the fields. A short trip this time, mainly to test the new tent and see how it all went together.

This site is good for us as it is only 40 minutes away from home making it a quick getaway on a Friday after work. We enjoyed our stay here and the facilities are good, however the female shower/toilet block was cleaner than the male one, this could have been due to a large family gathering in the other field.

Overall we had a good stay and would come back if we wanted a couple of nights away as it is also a good base for going to Martin Mere, which we did on Sunday before heading home.
We like going here and our little one really enjoys feeding every last duck! It is nice to walk around and when we went they also had their Bionic Bugs event and a fun trail for little ones. We did a bug hunt and enjoyed pond dipping, something which none of us had done before and our little one liked scooping up all the different bugs and beasts that live in our ponds.

The weekend was enjoyed by us all and we are counting down to our next adventure!!
